The Truth

CNN and Fox News both reported of the two cops killed in LA Compton. CNN shares the story titled as "Police identify and charge man with shooting two deputies, and he was already in custody." This post is dated today's date. The report goes on the explain the shooting of the two deputies and how the "suspect" was already in custody before they charged him. In the article they go on to explain that the suspect was treated poorly in custody and they withheld food from him. The article done by Fox News titled "Compton 'ambush' leaves 2 LA County sheriff's deputies 'fighting for their lives'." Their article is dated September 13th, so several days before CNN covered the report. In this they had a suspect but made no reference to the fact that the suspect was in custody, instead the article focused on the two deputies in the hospital while a swarm of protestors shouted threat and hops of death for the two in the hospital.  While yes the two articles are dated days apart form each other, it is interesting to see who withholds what information or chooses not to include.  To my knowledge  Fox has not posted a follow-up article to this as CNN has today, it will be interesting to see what gets "swept under the rug" with the upcoming debates and elections.

The Difference

In recent news, dated today, Police officers in Iowa arrested 4 men after finding a body burning in a ditch. Some reports explain that the man found burning in the ditch was black and this is included in their headline. CNN was one of these, their headline read "Four Arrested after Black Man's Body found Burning in a Ditch in Iowa. However, another headline coming from Fox News simply states "Iowa Authorities Arrest 4 In Killing of a Man Whose Body was Found Burning in a Ditch." Just below the article is a sentence saying "Although the victim was Black and the suspects are White, there was “no evidence” the slaying was racially motivated, authorities say." In both articles, they both explain the murder and give as much detail as possible, while also doing this both go on to explain what type of person the victim was, a kind man. However the difference in the articles are toward the bottom where CNN goes on to explain that the local school shut down, in order to honor the loss of a man and further allow the community to recognize the racial disparities and injustice that African Americans face. This peice was left out in the Fox News report, meaning that some may not have known that the school closed and even though CNN and Fox news were informed that the crime presented no "racial agenda" that for some it is still looked at as such.

Introduction

This blog aims to discuss the medias influence on society in terms of news coverage of crimes, video recordings, discussions and policy implications. The media in this sense being the larger ones, such as CNN and Fox News. In no way does this blog take a political stance on certain issues, it's main objective in to provide a unbiased look into the idea that the public is a self appointed jury and the idea that everyone involved in a crime that is publicized has already been determined guilty or innocent long before trial.
